Small hydropower projects are normally run-of-the-river schemes with no storage of water. For a project to be economically viable it is essential to know whether there will be sufficient discharge available or not. As a normal practice, flow duration curves are used to determine the dependable flows. However, at many potential sites the discharge data of stream is not available. To determine the flow duration curve at such un gauged site, methodologies are developed.

It was intended to showcase the potential of new technologies for assessing the flow through indirect methods such as hydrological modeling for small hydro schemes. Streams of Beas basin in Himachal Pradesh were considered in this study

Extraction of profiles along the identified streams and their tributaries were carried out to locate the ideal drops along the streams. Criteria for identifying appropriate locations were based on the optimum drop and a reasonable distance along the stream. These locations were translated in to outlet points to be used in the hydrological model (SWAT) to assess the flow available at these locations.

A stand alone application (Small Hydro Power Potential Calculator (SHP2C) has been developed to disseminate the outputs.

Salient features of the application include modules for Profile Extraction; User defined site selection and Power potential calculation. The backend database has flows simulated using the hydrological model.
